It all began with The Frosty Founders’ “Grandma Joyce” and her journey through Alzheimer’s disease as a musician and philanthropist. Sharing her musical talents with local Seniors was one of the many ways she brought joy to others and made lasting connections within her community.
Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2018, Joyce continued to spread cheer to others by leading Sing-A-Longs on the piano as a Memory Care resident. As her disease progressed - and as she fought through COVID - , her strength and commitment to giving continued through Sing-A-Longs with her family over FaceTime and other Seniors in her Memory Care community. As she started to lose her ability to speak, she communicated by playing the piano - typically starting with a favorite Mozart or Chopin and always ending in “Frosty The Snowman.” While all had enjoyed the complex classical pieces she had been able to play as a former professional musician, the old-time favorites from her childhood stayed in her memory the longest and were also the ones that brought the most smiles and engagement with other Seniors. As her disease went into the final stages, her family played Christmas carols and other childhood favorites to connect with her and try to spark happy memories - just like she used to do. In a few of those special times, she came back to life…
Joyce passed from Alzheimer’s disease in 2022 and is greatly missed. Her daughter, Wendy, and granddaughters Sophia and Charlotte wanted to continue her beautiful tradition of sharing music with others. With that in mind, The Frostys were brought to life!
The Frostys bring joy to Seniors living with dementia through music and fun. An intergenerational community-engagement program consisting of volunteer chapters of children in grades 4 through 8, The Frostys join local Seniors at Memory Care Homes for Sing-A-Longs - all year round. The program benefits two generations. Children build empathy and charitable spirits by sharing their time and cheer with Seniors impacted by dementia. Seniors feel connection to their community and enjoy happy childhood memories sparked by The Frostys’ research-based song catalog.
We are thrilled to partner with the Rancho Santa Fe School District for our pilot Chapter of The Frostys! As a Rowe Frosty, your child has the opportunity to participate in up to 4 Sing-A-Longs per year at local Memory Care communities - 1 Sing-A-Long per season. And prior to each Sing-A-Long, 2 lunchtime rehearsals are held. All Frostys and friends interested in the program are welcome to join the rehearsals. Mini-lessons about dementia and presentation tips are shared during Frosty Rehearsals as well.
Frostys make Cheer All Year cards to share with Seniors at the Sing-A-Long. Card templates and sentence starters are provided at Frosty Rehearsals.
First, register your child as a Frosty through the link below. Once the Sing-A-Long time, date and location are set, registered Frostys receive a link to sign up for the next season's Sing-A-Long.
Once sign ups are complete, you'll receive an email confirmation with event location and other details.
Visual queues can help people with dementia so we encourage festive holiday or patriotic accessories at all Sing-A-Longs, regardless of the season. So yes, a Santa Hat in June :)
Song selection is based on The Frostys research-based song catalog, which is full of many songs your child already knows and loves. We sing a mixture of patriotic and festive songs to engage Seniors and spark happy childhood memories. Song examples include You're A Grand Old Flag, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Take Me Out to The Ballgame, Star Spangled Banner and, of course, Frosty the Snowman.
